Studying Geometry Effectively
Mathematics is often referred to as the language of the universe. It is what scientists use to explain what is behind natural phenomena and what they use to try and understand many more mysteries to be solved by human kind. Geometry is of these so-called subfields. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Geometry is a branch of Mathematics that deals with the measurement, properties, and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids. It is one of the easier to pick up branch of Mathematics seeing as how you are dealing with real and actual shapes rather than imaginary points in a Cartesian coordinate plane.
However, some students still feel pressured and intimidated by this subfield as it is still a branch of Mathematics. But fear not, for in this article we will go over how you can study and excel at the branch of Mathematics known as Geometry. But how do you excel at this specific branch of Mathematics? Relevance of Geometry
Every branch of Mathematics has its own relevance in some form or another. From understanding abstract and imaginary numbers, to finding the possibility of life on other planets, there is a whole array of uses for the several branches of Mathematics. However, Geometry has some rather useful applications and relevance which you can apply in real life such as:
1. Understand basic shapes and angles
Understanding inorganic shapes is a fundamental knowledge for the human race. Without the idea of the round wheel, we would have hardly any form of comfortable land transportation. Without the understanding of angles and how they work, seeing the universe through a telescope would just have been a pipe dream for humankind. Only through understanding these basic shapes and angles have we, the human race, advanced so far to reach where we are now.
2. Will be helpful in engineering and architecture
If you intend to take a course as an engineer or architect, then chances are that this branch of Mathematics will be able to help you a lot in your future projects. Shapes are the foundation of any infrastructure, and only by understanding these shapes thoroughly can you make an impressive building.

Tips to study Geometry effectively
Studying the branch of Mathematics known as Geometry is often not as dreadful as learning derivatives and integrals, but you will still need to pump up a lot of effort if you really want to get better at this branch. Here are a few tips to help you study Geometry effectively.
1. Take a deep breathe
The most common cause for your mind to go blank when solving problems is panic. This could lead to irregular breathing patterns and the lack of oxygen circulating in your body. And while there are no veins and capillaries inside your brain, it still needs a sufficient amount of oxygen to function properly.
So the best way to deal with this is to take a few deep breathes to make sure you remain calm and have sufficient oxygen levels in your body. This should be the first thing you should do to make sure that everything else goes smoothly.
2. Do not hesitate
Hesitation and fear is a common reaction towards something we do not understand. This is what often constitutes to the growing backlash and hate towards Mathematics and its various branches.in order for you to study and become good at Geometry, you must first remove the hesitation and fear of learning the subject as this will only hold you back and make you less enthusiastic to solve problems involving Geometry.
3. Prepare all that you will need
The next thing you should do is to make sure you have all the materials that you need to study Geometry. These materials are necessary, especially those used for measurement, as it will help you make less errors and miscalculations.
• Extra sheets of paper
Extra sheets of paper are useful to write your solutions on so that you won’t forget how you derived that answer.
• Ruler
A ruler is a standard measuring device used to measure the length of any straight surface. You will need this to make accurate measurements of the length of lines and the sides of most shapes.
• Protractor
A protractor is another measurement device necessary for studying Geometry. But instead of length, a protractor measures angles.
• Compass
Unless you can draw a perfect circle with a diameter equal to what is asked, then you will need this tool just as much as you will need the others. A compass will allow you to draw perfect circles with definite diameters.
• Calculator
The last useful tool you will need is a calculator. This will help you save time by solving complex problems for you in under a second when it would have taken you about minute to solve.
4. Be familiar with the terms
Just like any other branch of Mathematics, Geometry has its own set of specific terms and vocabulary you need to be familiar with. These include terms such as lines, angles, points, shapes, and other things you most likely have knowledge of.
But as you progress in your Geometry lessons, you will most likely encounter new terms such as cylinders, cones, cubes, arcs, chords, and other terms. It would be advisable to be familiar with these terms to avoid any possible confusion in the future.
5. Sketch the problem out
Problems involving Geometry often include shapes or angles. You will then be asked to fins the length of a certain side or the measurement of a certain angle. And while you can solve these problems using the formula given b your teacher, it will be more effective to understand Geometry of you were to sketch the shapes or angles n the problems.
Sketching will undoubtedly cost you time, but if you have a lot of time allocated to studying Geometry, then you can always do this to better understand the principle behind the formula you used.
You will also be able to see if your answer was correct based on the proportions of your sketch. For instance, you answered 12 cm as the measurement of the adjacent line of a specified angle in a right triangle. However, when you sketched that answer, the line had an extra 3 centimetres. This has shown that there was something wrong with the answer you derived.
6. Practice…a lot
It should come to no surprise that the amount of effort you put in into studying a subject will be equal to the results you will get. So, you should make sure to practice a lot if you want to really excel at Geometry. Practice and repetition will allow your brain to get sharper and familiar with problems involving Geometry.
7. Take a breather
After practicing extensively and repeatedly studying for a long time, you might feel exhausted. When this happens, it would be a good time to take a break and relax for a few minutes. Remember the 50 minute method. This is where you divide an hour by spending 50 minutes studying and 10 minutes relaxing to give yourself a break.
Taking a break will allow your body to rest and avoid physical fatigue. You will also avoid an possible burnout caused by studying for too long. And once you return to your studies, you will have a brand new perspective about the problem you left unsolved.
8. Teach it to others
After you have studied Geometry extensively and practiced a lot, the next best thing to do is to teach what you have learned to others. This will greatly benefit yourself and the person you taught as well.
By teaching others, you will recall in real time the carious things that you have learned which can strengthen memory retention. The person you are teaching may also have various questions about Geometry which will test the level of mastery you possess.
