Why You Should Become a Home Tutor

What is home tutoring?

Home tutoring is 1-to-1 tuition based at home. Instead of students going into tuition centers, they are getting tuition in the comforts of their homes. In this sense, home tutors go to their students’ houses to teach. They get the sole attention from their home tutors unlike in schools. Home tutoring is also very personal and can be customized according to a student’s learning style and pace. However, although it is called home tutoring, there are instances wherein home tutors can take tuition to other places such as museums or parks to provide students with better learning experiences.

Why be a home tutor?

Singapore has one of the best education systems in the world. The government puts so much emphasis on education that it’s not hard to imagine students getting supplemental learning even after school hours. They want to get all they can to get ahead in school or make sure they understand the topics they are learning if they are struggling. This means that the demand for home tuition is high.

Some have made a full-time career with home tuition while others stick to the part-time scheme. However, if you are hesitant of trying it out, we have some reasons why you should try being a home tutor.

Because of the high demand for home tutors, it’s also a good way for you to earn extra money to increase your income or to use it for your savings. Even only a few hours of tutoring can help with any financial concerns you may have. For students, it’s extremely useful if you are living on your own.

Home tuition usually pays by the hour or for every session. Make sure that you speak with your student’s parents (if they hired you) thoroughly about salary expectations. Also make sure that you will be under a payment scheme that would benefit you and will be convenient for the parents, such as they can pay you every after tuition session or they can pay you weekly.

If you can’t be a full-time tutor, don’t worry. There is an option for being a part-time one because of the flexible working hours. This also brings us to the second reason.

2. Flexible working hours

Unlike a 9-5 job, being a home tutor gives you the chance to work on flexible hours. You can choose the hours in which you can or want to work or schedule the tuition sessions around the time of your availability. There is no set schedule for you. The only thing you need to remember is to show up on time at the agreed upon time.

As such, you also have the chance to pick your days off. You can choose whether you want to work on the weekends or weekdays. If you are willing enough, you can even work on both. Either way, there is flexibility available for you to work around your schedule and teach your students.

3. Discover a love for teaching

Sometimes people don’t realize they love doing something unless they try it. The same goes with home tuition, especially if you have already chosen a different field from teaching. However, that shouldn’t stop you from discovering your love for teaching as you guide your students through each of their academic struggles.

Not only may you discover your love for teaching but you’ll also be able to refine your teaching skills and also broaden your knowledge of the subject. You’ll also be able to exercise your creativity as you won’t only be teaching your students but also excite enthusiasm in them and motivate them to continue and love learning. It can be an extremely rewarding job for you, if not a little challenging. However, you may also find your purpose in teaching these children and that would provide a deeper satisfaction.

4. Gain experience

Being a home tutor will not only provide you with the opportunity to develop your teaching skills but it will also help you in adding a new set of skills to your resume. By tutoring students individually, it will give you an insight into the experience of teaching. Depending on your preferences, you can focus on a subject, an academic level, or both. When you are tutoring, you have the option to choose what to focus on. As there are many options in Singapore’s education system, the ranges in curriculum programs will improve your employability prospects, whether you choose to stay in the home tuition field or explore new ones.

5. Develop other skills

As you go through your tutoring journey, you will also develop other skills other than teaching. You will also improve your interpersonal skills as well as communication skills. It’s important to learn to rely on your strengths and skills and challenge yourself. Teaching students won’t be easy. They also have their issues other than their academic struggles that could also impact how they do academically. This is why you’ll also learn to exercise patience and kindness. These students may not open up to you immediately or hesitate to learn because of low self-esteem, so it’s going to be your responsibility to learn how to get them to open up. You can share your passion with your students and help them find their own success.

When they learn to respect you, they will also learn valuable interpersonal skills that they can use in the future. They will also be able to discover their strengths and weaknesses through your teaching. In the true character of tuition, it allows you to have a personal and long-lasting relationship with your students even after they have reached their academic goals.

7. Improve your subject knowledge

If you love creating the academic syllabus and enjoy learning as much as you enjoy teaching, this is for you. You can also create learning tips for your students that will help them in their lessons. This can include effective note-taking so they will be able to read and look back on the topic with ease. As such, you will also be able to improve your knowledge of the subject or topic. Sometimes, we tend to forget some details in a topic, so teaching students will also act as a refresher and will also help you in learning new things with your student.

In teaching students you will learn that they will not be the only ones to improve and grow but you as well. You’ll learn to be virtuous and develop your identity and values as a home tutor. There will be an improvement in life as you improve your students’ learning. You will learn that you weren’t the same person you were before when you started tutoring. There may be internal growth in you such as being more open to challenges or learning how to relate to students’ reasons for their lack of motivation. You will learn to understand your students and in turn, may also understand yourself more.

Being a home tutor is a simple yet effective way to help the future by helping these students reach their academic goals and pave the path to their bright futures.
