Becoming a Patient Home Tutor

You must always be careful about the language you use with a young, sensitive learner. What you say to your student can have a profound, long-lasting effect on how they feel about the material, about learning, or even on their general self-esteem. You must be careful not to say anything that may make them feel inferior or discouraged from learning. You should encourage them to want to study and grow instead.

When you see that you need to be firm with them, there are also correct methods on how to discipline them that would not have to use harsh language. However, it’s also not easy to know what you should and shouldn’t say to your students, especially when you get carried away at the moment. This is why it’s better to take precautions and practice them when you are tutoring.

Instead of telling them in negative statements, you can switch them up so that they turn into more encouraging, positive statements. For example, if you want to tell them the material is simple and they should be able to get it, why not try telling them they will be able to get and master it at the end of the lesson since the material is so simple? This way, the student wouldn’t feel inferior for not getting the topic immediately and will instead feel encouraged that they will eventually.

For a lot of people, repeating themselves can be a hassle and a waste of time. As a home tutor, you will spend a lot of time repeating yourself. We know it can be annoying but repetition can sometimes be a way for students to remember things. Instead of snapping at your student that you have repeated yourself a lot, you can ask them what they have remembered about what you have taught them.

You may also visit libraries or do an internet search for books that can educate you on how to be patient when teaching if you want to learn more in-depth about the topic. Making deliberate attempts to manage your students well is a challenging but rewarding component of being a tutor.
