Preparing in Transitioning to Adulthood

As the world around us, our lives are also constantly evolving. Some may experience little changes every day while others may live differently one day and change drastically the next. However, everyone can agree that the transition to adulthood can be one especially great jump. Gaining the independence that comes with being an adult can be very daunting but it’s also something to appreciate.

There will be many changes in the different aspects of your life. There will be many things that you will have to deal with such as your social circle, relationships, finances, schedules, and many more. Not only that but most of the decisions you’ll be making yourself. You can take advice from many people but at the end of the day, your decisions will be yours. Sounds like a lot, right? You don’t have to worry, there are always ways to help you prepare for it.

1. Set some life goals

As well as in our previous posts, we have reiterated the importance of setting goals. Goals can be long-term or short-term. Setting goals is very important as this will help you decide what’s important to you in life and what you want to achieve. In a sense, it helps you down the right path as you have a destination of where you want to be. Many make the mistake of going with the flow and while it may be alright to also just go wherever it takes you, it may come to a point in your life when you may feel like you’re lost and without direction.

Your life goals don’t have to be grand. By now, you may already have an idea of what you want in life. Do you want to travel? And which places do you want to visit? Do you want to lead a simple life? Are you thinking of having a family? These are some of the rough goals that many have already thought of. These goals aren’t as grand as setting to become a billionaire, but it still gives you the motivation to move towards them.

At the end of the day, your goals can help you with building stronger motivation. You will want to work towards them. Your goals may change for a bit but once you have set your mind and heart to it, even if you take a detour, you will still find back your path to it. Consider the steps you have to take in order to reach your goals. It doesn’t have to be all planned out for you but make sure you take the necessary steps to get there. If your goal is to have your own house, you can start learning about real estate or start reading about it, get yourself used to the terminologies and processes. Then, you can plan out how you can pay for the house of your dream. These are small steps that will ultimately lead you to your goals.

2. Create a career plan

Now, since you have an idea of what you want in life, it’s also time to figure out the steps on how to get there. Of course, not everyone is privileged so the best way to achieve the life we want is to get a job. The question then lies, what kind of job will you pursue to achieve what you want in life. For different people, we also have different priorities when it comes to careers.

Having a career plan will help you in making sure you have a guide for your dream job. Sometimes people don’t intend to choose a career based on their chosen field but more on what they can get out of the job. Some consider the salary for the job, while some are more inclined to enter a career where they will be supported by their colleagues and a good working environment. Others also think that working alone would be beneficial for them while others love working in teams. Some pursue the things they love and are passionate about while others stick to what they are good at. Many are also aiming to have a work-life balance while others aim for regular working hours.

Those are only some of the considerations people make when thinking of a career. It’s also time for you to choose which of those do you prioritize when it comes to having your dream job. Do you also have the means to sustain and grow in the job you want? Don’t forget that even if you have goals for your future, you should also take care of your present. Working yourself to the bones will not help you and can even cause burnout, which will not help at all when it comes to transitioning to adulthood.

3. Learn to manage your time

Adults know that time is extremely precious and limited. There are just about a hundred commitments you have to attend to, as well as other tasks you have to accomplish. And this also does not include all the responsibilities you have to yourself. All within the same number of hours every day.

It can get stressful juggling your tasks and responsibilities every day so you would need to learn to manage your time wisely. Strategize and decide what you want to invest your time in. are you going to spend the rest of your day playing games and watching television? Or are you going to finish your homework and read about the next topic for your class in advance? These are simple decisions that can impact your path towards success.

Allocate the time and energy you have for the things that matter and cut down on those that would not benefit you. However, don’t also forget to rest and spend time with your loved ones. Being an adult is stressful enough so don’t spend so much time thinking of what you should be doing rather than actually doing it. As much as you work for your future, you also should keep and build relationships.

4. Learn to network

5. Manage your finances

Being an adult also comes with the responsibility of handling your finances and as you begin your journey to financial independence, you will also need to learn a few things. Having financial stability is important as it will be what is usually the most crucial aspect when achieving your goals.

There are many ways for you to work towards earning more while still working on your goals such as doing part-time jobs or side hustles like small business or freelancing. Investing is also a good way for you to earn, but you would have to learn how to do it well else you’ll be left with less than what you started with.

However, in earning, you should also not forget to save. Take into account all the things you need to pay for and create a budget. You can use a simple method of 50/30/20, wherein you use 50% of your budget for your necessities such as bills for rent (if you are renting), groceries, etc. Then, you have 30% for your allowances and play money. You can set aside the 20% as your savings. This way you would have savings for emergencies or rainy days while also not sacrificing treating yourself to good food or shopping.

Budgeting and managing can be tricky but if you set your mind to it, you can learn to adjust and use the system that works well for you and your lifestyle. However, also understand that saving is important if you don’t want to find yourself stuck in a dire situation.

Conclusion

Change is inevitable and one thing that is always constant. Being an adult may be a confusing and tiring phase. There may be times when you feel lost and insecure, but it is a phase that everyone has to go through. Don’t be so hard on yourself and also remember to enjoy the transition to adulthood. As long as you have the plans to back you up and you are careful with your decisions, you will do just fine.
