Making a Conducive Study Space at Home

Time and time again, we have reiterated the importance and benefit of having a designated study area in the house that will only be dedicated to your children’s academics. The place where you study is very important as it affects memory retention, focus, and creativity.  The milieu has a huge impact on a student’s learning, this is why students study in spaces like the library or peaceful cafes. This is also why classrooms are designed to be conducive to student learning.

Since you have no control over public areas, there are lesser chances of you being able to create the environment you want to study in. However, you can certainly control the area for studying at home. For some, studying at home is not as appealing as studying with friends at cafes or libraries, however, studying at home is one of the most convenient ways to study effectively while also saving money on food, beverages, and transportation. We have gathered some tips to make a conducive studying space at home.

Designate a study area

The very first step in creating a conducive study space at home is to have a space dedicated only to the study area. Find a spot inside the house where you can do all your tasks without any distractions. Having a designated place for studying is important as it sets your brain to learning over time that that is the area for you to go to when you learn. This means, your brain will automatically remember as soon as you go there and it will go into “study mode”. This is valuable when studying for important exams as it will skip your brain getting into the zone and will instead enter it on its own like clockwork.

Make sure to set your study desk towards the wall or towards a direction where there aren’t or fewer distractions. Don’t set your study desk near a window lest you want your focus straying from time to time. Without any sort of distractions in sight, this will make studying easier for you. It’s also important to make the area as comfortable as possible. You will be spending a lot of time in this area so invest in a comfortable chair and desk. However, make sure not to make it too comfortable as well, or you might find yourself dozing off instead of studying.

Dress for studying

When we stay at home, we tend to stay in our pajamas all day. For students, you may stay in your pajamas as well while studying. However, this isn’t a very particularly healthy habit to go with especially when it comes to studying. The same way we associate our beds with sleeping, we do the same with our pajamas.

This is why when you are studying, get dressed and change out of your pajamas as well as get out of bed. Our brains will then pick up the signal that we will be studying and not lazing around. Aside from that, you will feel more focused and refreshed if you take a shower and dress comfortably for studying before the activity.

Open your windows and let the light in

Aside from the usual health benefits of exposing ourselves to natural light such as our skin’s need for Vitamin D, it also helps us focus and become more productive. When it is time to study, open your windows and let the sunlight in. If your study space doesn’t warrant for more sunlight to penetrate through, you can opt for table or desk lamps to brighten up your station.

The same with taking a shower and dressing up for studying, it will help you focus more and signal your brain that it’s time for studying. Besides, it can be very difficult to read and study in the dark. With that being said, also keep in mind to modulate lighting as well. Lights that are too bright can also cause headaches that may also disturb your routine and distract you from effectively studying.

Should you listen to music?

Many students implore the power of music to drown out external noises that may distract them from studying. This may help them stay more focused on their work but at times, this can also be another cause for distraction especially when their minds start to wander off with the music. Once you start to pay more attention to the lyrics of the songs instead of the task at hand, it will be counterproductive.

We suggest picking music that will provide a background noise that wouldn’t be distracting at all. Classical music has been said to promote concentration while video game sounds or music also helps you remain focused. Listening to music without lyrics may help lessen the distraction while still providing you the music that will help make studying less boring for some.

Plants are friends

Houseplants are all the rave right now and many Singaporeans have tried their hand at taking care of plants inside their houses. They not only improve the quality of air inside the home but also provide color to the interior and cheer you up. Even just having a little green succulent plant by your study desk will add the pop of green color and make it livelier. It will also help you feel relaxed and peaceful, which will also contribute to studying better.

Phones are a no

Studying requires a lot of concentration and in doing so, you have to remove as many distractions as possible. One of the biggest distractions in studying in this day and age are those little devices called phones. We are all guilty of constantly using and checking our phones, whether it be because of social media, gaming, or others. To remove the biggest distraction is the first step to being able to focus more on the task at hand. Keep your phones away from your study area and if you can’t do it, at least turn it off or put it into airplane mode.

There are also apps that lock your phone away for a specific time or until you have finished your task. This would ensure that you are using your time to actually study and not get distracted and spend the next hour or so scrolling through social media.

Keep it positive

No matter how much we may want it, not everyone is born with the inclination for academics. This is why for some of us, revisions and studying for exams can be a source of dread. However, you shouldn’t let this negativity distract you from your goal. Keep a positive attitude while studying. Create a space that will keep you looking at the bright side such as posting your favorite quotes on the wall, creating a list of your goals, and posting them where you can always see them. This way, you can always see what you are hoping to accomplish with your study sessions. Once you finish your task, don’t forget to reward yourself. It can be the smallest reward such as your favorite candy or chocolate bar or five minutes watching your favorite TV program or reading your current book.
