The September 2020 holidays are finally nearing! Should we go out to play? Or should we just stay home and revise? What exactly should we do during the holidays so that we use our time wisely? Resting is wise since we had a long study term but revising is also wise since it prepares us for the next study term. Students are often faced with this “dilemma” – the paradox of choice. Finally being put through a time period without a given timetable, we don’t know how we should spend that time. Today, we dissect a few points/questions to make that “choice” simpler to make.
The very first question one could possibly ask would be if they have an upcoming examination to prepare for! If it’s right after the holidays, it might be a good idea to commit a bulk of your holiday to preparing for it. Revising for an upcoming examination would be a wise choice, since it probably carries some weightage to it. After all, we should try as hard as possible to make every examination attempt count! If the upcoming examination is not right after the holidays but shortly after, it might still be a good idea to focus on revising your topics during the holidays, since it’s a good time where you don’t learn new content so you can focus on revisiting past concepts as well.
Some might argue then that taking breaks during holidays is necessary. After all, it’s a holiday! One should engage in fun activities and have fun. In fact, it’s important to rest during the holidays, so that you won’t burn out from the long term of studying and subsequent study term as well. Many say that taking a break will take you further, because you enable yourself to recharge that fuel inside you. And that is certainly true because if you keep pushing yourself without taking sufficient breaks and taking care of yourself, you will not be able to reach your fullest potential.
The above two arguments are both true, but yet they don’t seem to be able to happen properly at the same time. Well, what’s important is finding a balance between both. As students, we need to rank our priorities firstly. If there’s things to revise over the holidays, then we just have to set time for it. But this does not mean we neglect time for ourselves to chill and take a break too. So if you have upcoming examinations, maybe play less and study more? If you feel like you just need to revise on your past work and there isn’t much to prepare for the next study term, then play a little harder!
