Direction: What If I Don’t Get Into My Dream School?

Maybe you have finished your national examinations and you are anticipating the release of your results, but at the same time, you are worried that your grades can’t bring you to your ‘dream school’. Or maybe you are in the midst of national examinations, and the thought of not being able to enroll in your ‘dream school’ or ‘dream schools’ is daunting you, even affecting your studies. If this is you, take a step back to consider these points:

Did You Try Your Best?

Many people- your teachers, your tutors, your parents or your peers- may always say this particular phrase– “as long as you tried your best”. And as cliche as they may sound, this phrase is indeed true. What really matters is whether you have maximised the amount of effort you put in. If you have always worked hard for your studies, don’t be afraid to acknowledge that you tried your best and give yourself some credit. If you’re the kind to be not so consistent with your studies, but gave yourself the best push towards the start of the examination, very good job to you as well! There is no hard and fast rule to measuring who has put in more effort. It is always about yourself, and only you know whether you have put in the most amount of effort you could have. As long as you have fulfilled that, be proud of your hard work and treasure this experience of working hard- it will indeed go a long way and teach you important values like diligence, or essential skills like gaining efficiency. Using the indicator “whether or not I have gotten into my dream school” to measure the value of your hard work is definitely not worth it! The learning points you gleaned are way more invaluable than the sheet of paper that documents your grades on results release day.

Blessing In Disguise? You'll Never Know

Let’s be real. We always try to make the best choices for ourselves in life, but sometimes we just get caught off guard. There are so many factors in our circumstances that we can’t control, and we never know the better. Perhaps fast-forward into the future, and you did not manage to get into your ‘dream school’. But it turns out that, the school that you actually enrolled into has a school environment that suits you better. Maybe you might even end up finding long-lasting friends who truly understand you. You will never know what’s in store for you. But when the better does come, you will appreciate how it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. What’s more, you don’t have to only start appreciating your new school only after receiving tangible benefits. No matter which school you go to, there are always good things that await your discovery, and it’s all about whether you are willing to embrace this environment with an open mind.

Looking At The Grand Scheme Of Things

Last but not least, let’s look at what ‘dream school’ really means. The idea of a ‘dream school’ is ultimately subjective, and up to what you think. And perhaps, your vision of a ‘dream school’ could be myopic, and only relatable to your circumstances and what you want at that time. Time passes, and you may find yourself wishing that you had gone into another school instead of your ‘dream school’. This can indeed happen, and it has happened to many people before. Life is more than just getting into a school of your choice. We can broaden our perspectives, and see everything else that’s been placed in our lives. And as long as we are actively living life, we can always chase after our dreams and fulfil what we want, even if it takes a different or longer path. Or perhaps, it may not even be longer, but in fact, a life event that takes us by surprise, can sometimes also be a short-cut to help us really understand what we want in life, and attain it. A wise man will always look at the grand scheme of things.
